Japanese-Americans Pitch In For Quake, Tsunami Relief

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Japanese-Americans and others are opening their hearts and their wallets this week to the victims of Japan’s earthquake and tsunami.

In Los Angeles, 26-year-old Sayaka Fukushima made a donation at a memorial vigil in the city’s Little Tokyo district. She says she felt helpless and needed to do something to aid her native country.

In San Francisco, Eric Fuji is donating profits from his sushi restaurant to Japan as he awaits word on a missing friend in Sendai.

And on Friday, college students plan to hold a cell-phone-light vigil for the people of Japan.

Fundraising efforts across the country and donations by individuals have been showing some results. The Chronicle of Philanthropy says relief organizations had collected more than $87 million as of Thursday.
